[Toronto] Call out for solidarity with the indigenous affected by Chevron in Ecuador

Dear activists, organizers and civil society,

We would like to get you engaged and be part of the ‘Committee in Solidarity with the indigenous people of Ecuador’, who have been affected by the oil giant Chevron. This company contaminated the Ecuadorian amazon rain forest for over 20 years, leaving a pollution 30 times higher than the Exxon Valdez disaster in Alaska, and what is probably the largest oil-related environmental catastrophe in the world, and therefore also known as the Amazon Chernobyl. Chevron’s destruction of the Ecuadorian Amazon has led to a proliferation of Cancer, miscarriages, and birth defects, among others. In 2011 the Ecuadorian court, after nearly 20 years of legal battle, ruled that Chevron had to pay for the destruction that it caused and was forced to compensate the victims. On December 11, 2013 the Supreme Court of Ecuador ratified the ruling and set the final amount owed at $9.5 billion dollars. Information about the lawsuit here: http://vimeo.com/37113397

The indigenous plaintiffs are now also trying to gain justice in several Courts across the globe including Canada as Chevron does not have assets in Ecuador. On December 17, 2013, the Court of Appeal for Ontario ruled that Ecuadorian indigenous communities indeed have the right to pursue all of Chevron’s assets in Canada to enforce the $9.5 billion Ecuador judgment (Chevron’s assets in Canada are estimated to be worth $15 billion). Thus, the entirety of the Ecuador judgment can be collected in Canada if the communities prevail on their enforcement action. Information related here: http://tiny.cc/zq787w

Likewise, President Rafael Correa has also exposed Chevron’s pollution and corruption that the oil giant is seeking to hide. Also presidents, activist, political parties and social movements from across the world have showed their support for Correa’s calling (http://tiny.cc/u3067w). The outcome of this solidarity call out have been several actions, like rallies outside Chevron’s offices or assets, awareness workshops, among others.

We need your support and endorsement, meaning that you and/or your organization will be participating and organizing awareness activities that we will be implementing such as: workshops, peaceful actions targeting Chevron’s offices, sharing the campaign information amongst your contacts and networks, and also participating at the International March against Chevron.

We are planning to have the first meeting of the Solidarity Committee on January 16, 2013 at the Hispanic Centre of York, 1652 Keele St. 6:30PM.
